About the Project
This project aims to address the challenges of documenting and coding child abuse and neglect. To do so, we've developed an innovative online training that coincides with the upcoming implementation of the International Classification of Diseases' 11th edition (ICD-11). This updated ICD system introduces more comprehensive methods for recording child maltreatment. As such, it's an opportune moment for health professionals to refresh their understanding. Improved documentation is crucial, as it helps identify and rectify gaps in care for vulnerable children and their families.

Initially, the online training will be available in Germany and Sweden. The transfer of the training for other countries is aspired.

This project is funded by the European Union’s DAPHNE programme (CERV-2022-DAPHNE project TICANDAC, project number 101096768).

The training "Child protection in medicine: core competencies and documentation" offers five modular segments encompassing 19 learning units. It introduces the overarching theories surrounding child abuse and neglect and delves into child protection within the medical sphere. Topics include the nuances of coding for child maltreatment, legal foundations, and strategies to involve children and parents in medical decisions. Alongside foundational knowledge, the training emphasises real-world applications through case studies. Each module concludes with an assessment of the content learned.

Development of the Training

The content for "Child protection in medicine: core competencies and documentation" was crafted by the project team, drawing from interviews, workshops, and existing resources from the University Clinics Ulm's Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy. The training also integrates material from projects funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), and the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ).
